A Roman Tradition of pillows and rings...

Under Roman Law, the ring was a sign of security, in essence protecting the interests of the bride to be. The small attendant (normally a relative of the bride) in European times was on hand to carry the brides train from the back, but once trains became out of vogue, the little helper was to carry the ring. The ancient Romans were the first to carry a small decorated pillow bearing the ring, again the symbol of love for the husband and wife to be, as a tradition made its way from from ancient Europe to the western ideology of a traditional wedding. The actual wedding ring is a Roman symbol and they carried them on cushions to symbolize their importance and to protect the delicate metals they are made from.

In an effort to keep the tradition but insure the safety of expensive wedding rings, many people have begun using ring bearer pillows on which fake wedding rings are attached. This maintains the tradition of the ring bearer boy while at the same time insures that he does not lose the rings somewhere down the aisle. Traditionally, the best man would remove the actual rings from the ring bearer’s pillow when asked for them by the minister or priest.

Traditionally, the pillows are white and have some sort of decorative ribbons or charms. The tradition of the white ring pillow is derived from royal crown coronations.
