on its astronauts, memory foam was originally thought to be too expensive for
the public. The material known as memory foam, or visco-elastic polyurethane
foam, is made predominantly from polyuretherane, with a few added chemicals to
add to its viscosity, thereby increasing the density of the foam. Depending on
the overall density of the material and the added chemicals used, the foam can
be firmer is cooler in environments and softer in warm temperatures.
 How
does it Work?
The foam gains its ability to mold to peoples necks and bodies when it is a
higher density foam, this molding is due to the heat from the individuals body
temperature, all of this can happen within minutes. Pressure from the body on a
pressure-sensitive lower density foam will allow the molded shape to be taken
even quicker than the later mentioned higher density foam. The memory foam
pillow will be more dense and heavy than a regular pillow but will provide much
more support. The cost will also be more than a regular down pillow, but will
last much longer.
Indentation Force Deflection (IDF) rating measures the amount of force, in
pounds, required to indent a 50" disc by 1". Commonly known as IFD at 25%
compression. However these memory foams are very pressure sensitive and can
change their firmness with temperature (cold = firm, warm = soft).
